The Monthly Guardian - October 2009
LETTER FROM SHARON HOLSCLAW, HEAD OF SCHOOL
Welcome to our new web-based monthly Guardian newsletter. I’m delighted to report that our students, from 3-year-old nursery to our new 8th-grade Class of 2010, are settling in and making a good start to a new year of growth and discovery. St. Martin’s-in-the-Field is exploring new ways to communicate to our families the values we have long held dear—that every student is a child of God and that we are entrusted with nurturing each child’s God-given talents. I thank you for your patience as we worked to get our new “green” web-based newsletter up and running. Although our communications platform is new, our activities, lesson plans, dedicated staff, and student-focused teaching are tried and true. We continue to emphasize small class size in order to provide high-quality instruction suited to children’s various learning styles. More
ST. MARTIN’S IS GOING GREEN!
That’s right! We are going GREEN! This year, our school will be applying for its certification as a “Green School” by the State of Maryland. We currently conduct numerous green activities on campus, and the cumulative effect of our “Reduce, Reuse, & Recycle” program helps our environment. The teaching in our school of green ideas and green practices helps us be better stewards of our great planet. Please consider turning off you car while waiting for the car pool line. This helps reduce car emissions and improve our air quality. Remember: “There is no Planet B”.

GREEN TEAM PARENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
The Green Team is still seeking parent volunteers for 3rd Grade, 7th Grade and 8th Grade. Parents will assist teachers with Going Green projects and communicate regularly with other Green Team members. This is an excellent opportunity to take part in our efforts to get certified as a Green School. We are always looking for parents to join our team! There are several fun projects and school activities to get involved in. Please e-mail cristina.decker@comcast.net or call Cristina at 410-507-4322.

VOLUNTEERS FOR FALL FESTIVAL SEEKING PARENTS, STUDENTS, ALUMNI, PARISHINERS
Volunteers are needed for the Fall Festival, scheduled for Saturday, October 24, from 11:00am to 3:00pm on St. Martin’s-in-the-Field’s campus on 375-A Benfield Rd, Severna Park. This promises to be fun for all and a great way to get to know our St. Martin’s community while helping the school. More
HAUNTED HALLWAY—HALLOWEEN CHILLS
The Elementary School hallway will be spookily transformed, starting at about 6:30 p.m., on the night of Friday, October 30, when the 8th-Grade class dares its fellow students and friends to enter the Haunted Hallway. Entry fee is $2.00 and proceeds will benefit the 8th-Grade class gift fund. So, you are doing good as you are getting scared!
The Haunted Hallway will be appropriate for Kindergarteners and above. For families with Pre-School siblings, there will be games and activities for the little ones in the Parish Hall. A veil of secrecy enshrouds the ghastly decorations, limited only by the 8th Graders macabre imaginations! Beware!
SALLY FOSTER, GIANT BONUSBUCKS, SAFEWAY, TARGET
Sally Foster's deadline has been extended to Wendesday October 7th. Our school is now earning points in the BonusBucks program. Safeway is continuing to give back money. Thank you for your participation in these and other programs. Target RedCards also earns money for our school. More
WELCOME TO NEW STAFF
Five new people joined our St. Martin’s-in-the-Field school community this fall. Allison Bohr, Margaret Duffy, Alice Leigh, Beth Linsenmeyer, and Harriet Petrocelli. More
SPORT REPORT
The Mustang Soccer team is showing steady improvement. Despite losing our last two games by one goal, the effort and determination has been inspirational. Losing Stewart and Lauren to season-ending injuries poses a difficult challenge to our team. The good news is that each and every player is digging deep and putting forth their best effort, and our team spirit is wonderful. What we are lacking in experience, we make up for with heart. More
LETTER FROM MARCIA KOKOSKI, PA PRESIDENT
We have a very active Parents’ Association at St. Martin’s-in-the-Field Day School. We currently have 14 board members and coordinators and more than 22 individuals organizing events. I am excited to say that the Parents’ Association raised more than $35,000 for the school last year. Document cameras, digital cameras, Mimeo boards, LED projectors, Elmo equipment, and new sand and mulch for the playground are just a few wonderful things that were purchased with the funds that we raised.
There are a few positions open and many volunteer opportunities available. The Parents’ Association plans many exciting events throughout the school year, such as the Book Fair, Fall Festival, Halloween Dance, the Holiday Shopping Event, and the Annual Auction Benefit. Anyone interested in helping out with any event, please contact me at mkokoski@foxdentechllc.comor 410-451-3638. We encourage all parents to attend our PA meetings. We meet the first Tuesday of every Month. We love to see new faces and hear new ideas!
