Elementary School - Academic Program

St. Martin’s Day School recognizes that each child is unique and learns best in a positive, stress-free setting, which promotes the growth of the whole child. Students are encouraged to explore their environment indoors and out. The school’s purpose is to instill a love of learning in a nurturing Christian atmosphere. In this academically rich environment, character, independence, confidence and a strong sense of self worth are stressed.

The elementary curriculum includes a challenging academic program, which emphasizes strong foundation-building skills, hands-on learning, problem solving and critical thinking. General studies include reading, language arts, mathematics, social studies, science, art, music, physical education, French (Nursery through Grade 8), library science, and technology. Our math program in Kindergarten through the Fourth grade utilizes the University of Chicago School Mathematics Project (UCSMP) Everyday Mathematics curriculum. In a spiraling curriculum covering six content strands, students investigate mathematical ideas in greater depth each year meeting all skill levels and abilities. Reading and writing are integrated throughout the curriculum with phonics being a strong component of both. Computers are used in each classroom as enrichment and a computer lab is available for group teaching.
